February 2011 in the Garden Tract

Hello, Neighbors!

We celebrated two years with some treats at the Cypress Elementary School library.  Mary Shrank, of Shasta Living Streets, http://www.shastalivingstreets.org/, shared with us about the group's plans to "OPEN" Park Marina to non-motorized vehicles four times this year!  Naturally, "opening" a street to non-motorized vehicles is done most safely by "closing" the street to motorized vehicles, but never fear, this first event will only last 4 or 5 hours.  This will take place as part of the annual Whole Earth Festival at the City Hall Sculpture Garden on Saturday, April 23, 2011, from 10 am to 3 pm.

Details are still in the making, but the street festival will be open to performers with scheduled performances at the Washington Square (where the geese hang out).  Shasta Living Streets hopes to have a few high school and middle school bands, dance groups, baton twirlers, and anyone else who's interested in sharing in the family fun.  There will be no food or other vendors because the street festival hopes to benefit local businesses.  Flyers will be distributed to show local restaurants and businesses, as well as parking areas and traffic flow.  Shasta Living Streets will be looking for volunteers to help make this event successful.  Volunteers will operate in two shifts so that everyone has a chance to enjoy the festival with their families!

Our next GTS meeting will be held at the Redding Library in Community Room A on Monday, March 28th at 7 pm.  We will have Bob Brannon, Redding Police Department, share with us on graffiti eradification and how neighbors can partner with the police department.

I always look forward to your input on topics of interest to our neighborhood.  Neighborhood cleanup events, our community yard sale, traffic flow issues, pedestrian and bike safety, safe routes to schools, neighborhood beautification through planting daffodils, and partnering with our local schools to help with garden projects have been on our agenda over the past two years.

You neighbors are what make our neighborhood the community it is, and I'm grateful for your support, your interests, and your concerns.  Keep making the Garden Tract special!

Sincerely,
Monique Gaido (moniquegaido@gmail.com)
